Wet Weather Warning

CANCELLED as of 01/13/20

Present weather information indicates unusually heavy precipitation may occur in our region. Watch for moderate to major river flooding, road closures due to flooding and basement flooding.

Click here for a statement from the Monroe County Emergency Management Division.

During a heavy wet weather event, water use should be minimized to reduce rates of flow into our sanitary sewer system. If you have experienced a basement backup during any previous heavy precipitation, you should take steps to protect any valuable property by raising it off your floors or other steps to prevent possible water damage. We do not expect any problems to arise, but we do suggest that our customers keep attuned to the weather and take any reasonable precautions to avoid preventable damage to property.

Older homes can contribute excess inflow and infiltration (I/I) into the sanitary sewer system. Typically older homes have floor drains, footing drains and perimeter tile that are connected to the sewer system. Discharges from these ultimately can get into the sewer system reducing system capacity.

TIPS

Floor drains are a means for sewage to backup into a home. By eliminating or plugging them off where practicable it can reduce the chance of a sewer back up. Significant I/I can be reduced by installing a sump pump and discharging it to a storm sewer or French Drain. All footing drains and perimeter tile should be routed to it. Rerouting roof downspouts to discharge further away from your home can reduce I/I from getting into the sewer system.
