FEMA Assistance for August 2023 Storms

Home and business owners in the City of Monroe are now eligible for federal assistance to help recover from damages caused by severe storms, tornadoes and flooding on August 23/24, 2023.

Residents of the City of Monroe and Monroe County experienced storms with excessive rainfall that caused surcharging of sanitary and storm sewers, as well as high winds leading to damage to buildings and contents.

Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) assistance can include grants for temporary housing and home repairs, low-cost loans to cover uninsured property losses, and other programs to help individuals and business owners recover from the effects of the disaster.

Disaster Survivor Assistance (DSA) crews from FEMA are going door-to-door in central and southeast Michigan, including Monroe County.  These crews will be visiting homes, businesses, and nonprofit organizations in affected areas to help residents register for assistance, identify, and address immediate and emerging needs, and make referrals to other local, state, and voluntary agencies for additional support.

DSA crew members will never ask for or accept money and will always be wearing a FEMA identification badge with a photograph. A FEMA shirt, vest or jacket is not proof of identity. While helping someone register, they will ask for personal information, including social security number, annual income and bank information. Residents are encouraged to ask for identification before providing any personal information. They can also call the FEMA Helpline at 800-621-3362 to verify a FEMA visit is legitimate.

Residents and business owners who sustained losses in the designated areas can begin applying for assistance at:

• using the FEMA App.

* Anyone using a relay service, such as video relay service (VRS), captioned telephone service or others, can give FEMA the number for that service.

Local Disaster Recovery Centers (LDRC) will also be set up 60 days for those who need help applying in person, accept documents for existing applications, appeal applications, and provide updates on an application’s status.

Location and hours for the LDRC for Monroe County residents will be forthcoming.
