Storm Sewers & Drainage
The Engineering and Public Services Department is responsible for the maintenance of the vast majority of storm sewer manholes, catch basins, curb inlets, and storm sewer pipes within the City of Monroe. With an inventory of approximately 4,000 such structures and over 60 miles of storm sewers, the City relies largely on street sweeping to minimize the amount of debris that enters the system to begin with. Also, resident assistance in clearing routine debris from structures in front of their homes is always appreciated as well to minimize street and yard flooding. Public Services owns and operates and jet and vactor truck that can be used to clear blockages and clean storm structures and pipes, and this is operated consistently from April through November, weather permitting. A small minority of the drainage system within the City falls under the maintenance jurisdiction of the Monroe County Drain Commissioner’s Office (county drains), but in many of these instances the City will perform routine maintenance on their behalf for more efficient response time.
