Street Sweeping
The Department of Public Services performs regular street sweeping on all City streets and state highways within our boundaries except Interstate 75. Sweeping is performed by the City to help prevent excessive debris within curbs and gutters, which in turn helps to minimize drainage inlet clogging and promotes general health of the community. Regular sweeping also promotes compliance with the City’s MDEQ Storm Sewer System permit requirements. The City strives to sweep each street at least monthly in season, which is from April through November, and operates multiple sweepers during peak spring clean-up (April-May) and fall leaf drop (October-November). Certain areas with high debris loads and / or high profile locations are often addressed more frequently, such as the central business district, North Dixie Highway, and the Port of Monroe area. Sweeping activities are funded through the City’s Refuse millage.
