Juneteenth Holiday Observance
City offices will be closed Monday, June 19, 2023, in observance of the Juneteenth holiday.
We will reopen Tuesday, June 20th, at 8:30 AM to accommodate your city business needs.
Juneteenth has been recognized as an official federal holiday since 2021. Juneteenth is the commemoration of the end of slavery, specifically in Galveston, Texas, more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation was issued by President Abraham Lincoln's in 1862 and made effective in 1863.
News of the proclamation was slow to reach many areas of the country, either by technological means, enforcement in many places still under Confederate control, or as a way to keep the enslaved in bondage. As a result, in the westernmost Confederate state of Texas, enslaved people would not be free until much later.
The previously scheduled June 19th City Council work session and regular meeting will be rescheduled to Tuesday, June 20th, 2023.
Trash and recycling schedules will be unaffected.
