Alley
In addition to its 83-mile street system, the City of Monroe is also responsible for the maintenance of approximately 7 miles of stone-surfaced alleys, 2 miles of unpaved alleys, and 2.5 miles of paved alleys.
As alleys are not eligible for a share of the State of Michigan’s Transportation Funds, all maintenance activities are paid for through the City’s General Fund. New paving projects are funded largely through Special Assessment Districts on a frontage basis.
Contact the Engineering Department at 734-384-9126 to obtain a petition for circulation and further details if paving is desired. The Department of Public Services generally performs one comprehensive grading per year in late spring when subgrade conditions have stabilized, but responds to pothole and other complaints year-round as conditions allow.
