Message from the Director
The Monroe Public Safety Department is led by Director Chad J. Tolstedt, who was appointed in October of 2021. Director Tolstedt began his career with the Monroe Police Department in 1999, where he served as a Patrol Officer / Public Safety Officer (PSO), PSO Sergeant, PSO Lieutenant, and PSO Captain. During his time on the department, he also served on the Sheriff’s Officer Special Response Team (SWAT) for 19 years.
He is a graduate of Western Michigan University with a B.A. in Criminal Justice, Spring Arbor University with a Master’s Degree in Organizational Management, EMU School of Staff and Command (Class session 30) and the FBI National Academy (Class session 278). Director Tolstedt attended Firefighter I & II training in 2011, and then attended Fire Officer Leadership Training I, II and III.
“I am honored to have been chosen to lead the Monroe Public Safety Department which has provided its citizens the highest level of service for both police and fire since 1837. The department will continue work with the citizens of this historic city to continually improve operations with the objective to effectively address the safety and security needs of its community, and provide a professional and sustainable Public Safety Department.
