The City of Monroe is proud to support educators as we commemorate America 250, the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence in 2026.

This milestone offers strong opportunities for classroom learning, discussion, and student projects.  It is a time for students to reflect on:

  • The founding of the United States
  • The growth of Michigan
  • Monroe’s role in early American history
  • The responsibilities of citizenship

America 250 is not only about looking back — it is also about preparing students for the future and their role in shaping it. Educators are encouraged to:

  • Promote respectful civic dialogue
  • Encourage volunteerism
  • Discuss the meaning of democratic participation
  • Help students explore how communities grow and change

Schools interested in coordinating with the City of Monroe regarding city-produced America 250 programming may contact the Communications Department for additional information.

Updates and new resources will be posted as they become available!

Community-Wide Composition Acitivity

As part of America’s 250th Anniversary (1776–2026), students use official America 250 commemorative stationery to write or create a message for their future self—connecting personal growth with national history and reinforcing the idea that individual voices and actions contribute to our shared civic story.

Reading Lists

To support learning at every stage, the City of Monroe has compiled America 250 reading lists for students ages 5–8, 9–12, and 13–18. These curated book lists are designed to help young readers explore American history, civic values, and Monroe’s local story in age-appropriate ways.

Families and educators are encouraged to download the PDFs below to inspire meaningful conversations and deeper understanding as we commemorate 250 years of our nation’s history.
